Jacob Emory Pierce (1880-1952), was the founder of The Huntsville Times newspaper, which debuted March 23, 1910. The Huntsville Times Building was one of Huntsville's first "sky scrapers' with eleven floors.
When Pierce, heard a hotel was going in being built by Sam Erskine, and would be a 12-story building - one floor higher than his - he demanded another floor be added to his building. However, the Otis Elevator Co. had already built an elevator system for 11 stories. Pierce is said to have told the Otis Co. representatives that if they couldn't fix the elevators to go to the top, he would not pay.
To this day, the elevators go only to the 11th floor. Pierce never paid.
