Alien abduction of Cow: Kansas - May 4, 1897

"Monday night a farmer and his family were woken by the lowing of cattle. He went outside and saw a large object with bright lights hovering above his cows. He, his son and his servant hurried armed with axes towards it, in which the cow was lifted in the air hanging by a rope."

The 1897 Kansas Cow abduction hoax was thought to be true by many UFO enthusiasts for 63 years, until 1960 when the truth came out. An elderly Kansas woman came forward to say that shortly before the tale was reported, she had heard the farmer, Andrew Hamilton, boast to his wife about the story he had made up. Hamilton belonged to a local liars' club that delighted in the concoction of outrageous tall tales. According to the woman, "The club soon broke up after the 'airship and cow' story. I guess that one had topped them all."
